Dog Birthday Ideas: How to Celebrate Your Dog (or Cat) at Home
Nobody else remembers the date. You do.
Maybe it's the day they were born. Maybe it's the day they came home with you, nervous in the back seat. Either way, it's worth marking.
You don't need a venue or a theme. Most dogs want the same things on their birthday as any other day: you, a good walk, something tasty and a nap. So start there, and add a little ceremony.

1. Start with their favourite walk
The beach. The trail by the river. The long way round the park.
Let them choose the pace today. Let them sniff everything. For a dog, a slow walk with time to explore is the real party.
2. A dog-safe birthday treat
A small cake from a dog bakery, or something simple you make at home with dog-safe ingredients.
Keep it small. Skip anything with chocolate, grapes or raisins, onion, or the sweetener xylitol. These are harmful to dogs. If your dog has allergies or a sensitive stomach, check with your vet first.
One candle, for the photo only. Blow it out before the dog gets close.
3. Keep the party small
Two or three dog friends they already know is plenty. A big crowd of unfamiliar dogs is more stressful than fun.
- A fenced yard or a quiet park works better than a busy dog park.
- Have water bowls out and a quiet spot to retreat to.
- Keep it to an hour or two.
4. Birthday games at home
- Treat hunt: hide a few treats around the living room and let them sniff them out.
- New toy unwrapping: wrap a toy loosely in paper and let them tear it open. Supervise, and tidy the paper away after.
- A new trick: spend ten minutes teaching something simple. Dogs enjoy learning, and it's a nice way to spend time together.
5. Take the birthday photo
This is the one you'll look back on in ten years. A few things help:
- Shoot near a window, in soft daylight.
- Get down to their eye level.
- Hold a treat just above the lens for eye contact.
- Take lots. The best one is usually the one right after they sneeze.
A little something to wear makes the photo feel like an occasion. A bow tie or a collar that looks like a shirt front works well, because it's easy to put on and doesn't get in the way. A tartan like Phillip or a tweed like Kristen feels right for a birthday.
Put it on just before the photos, let them get used to it with a treat, and take it off when you're done.

What is a gotcha day?
A gotcha day is the anniversary of the day you adopted your pet, the day they came home. Many people with rescue dogs and cats celebrate it instead of a birthday, especially when the real birthday is unknown.
Everything on this list works for a gotcha day too. Some people also make a small donation to the shelter their pet came from.
Celebrating a cat's birthday
Cats prefer quieter celebrations.
- A new cardboard box. It never fails.
- A cat-safe treat, in a small amount.
- A new toy, or ten minutes with their favourite wand toy.
- A sunny spot, and nobody bothering them.
If you want a photo, keep it short. Some cats are happy to wear something light around the neck for a minute or two. If yours isn't, a photo in the box is just as good.

Other days worth celebrating
A birthday isn't the only day they're part of the family photo.
The holidays, when everyone is home. Lunar New Year, around the big family dinner. A wedding, if you're lucky enough to have one. Our guide to including your dog in your wedding covers that one.
